Biophilia: Pittsburgh
The Thurs., April 7 Biophilia: Pittsburgh meeting will feature Adam Haritan, foraging instructor and founder of Learn Your Land, who will lead a discussion on “Nature Connection Through Foraged Food and Medicine." For millennia, humans have relied on wild plant and mushroom species to fulfill a variety of purposes, including the creation and production of clothing, shelter, cordage, dyes, tools, fire and poisons. Perhaps the most important and obvious uses of wild species throughout history, however, have been as food and medicine. While much of the knowledge involved in the procurement of wild food has been dampened over several generations, it is still important and relevant to the 21st century.
Adam Haritan, foraging instructor and founder of Learn Your Land, will discuss the role wild food foraging plays today in providing the missing critical link connecting humans to their land. As the number of global environmental transgressions increases and the negative effects on the land become increasingly apparent, more and more people are seeking ways to create positive change. In order to protect the land, Adam suggests, humans must first connect to the land. This presentation will introduce the concept of foraging for food and medicine as one of the easiest and most effective ways to solidify this lasting connection. Adam will also discuss the work he is doing with LearnYourLand.com — an online database and community of Pennsylvania's naturalists, nature organizations, state parks, and environmental centers.
