Biophilia: Pittsburgh
Saturday, March 19, 2016 - 10:00 am - 2:30 pm Upper Environmental Charter School Tickets are $15 In the Pittsburgh area, over 20,000 trees have been planted since 2008 to improve the region’s tree canopy in the future. While it is exciting to imagine what these young trees will become one day, we still need to focus on the proper stewardship of our large mature trees along our streets, in our parks, and around our homes. These trees are doing the heavy lifting when it comes to environmental impacts on air quality, stormwater, and carbon sequestration. Our upcoming event Better with Age: A Workshop on Mature Tree Stewardship on Saturday, March 19 from 10AM-2:30PM at Upper Environmental Charter School will focus on how to best steward large, old trees. Burlton Griffith of Bartlett Tree Experts and Steve Horhut of Horhut Tree Experts will discuss common pruning practices for mature trees and tree risk assessment respectively. Bruce Woods from Duquesne Light Company will share with us the electrical utility perspective on tree pruning. Chris Cowles, a tree preservation expert, will talk about how to protect trees during construction. During lunch, Joe Stavish from Tree Pittsburgh will highlight some of Western Pennsylvania’s largest trees. The workshop will conclude with a walking tour around the school’s campus. Light refreshments and lunch are included. Parking: Please park in the school parking lot.
